Renegade-X is a free First Person Shooter, being developed by Totem Arts; a group of volunteers committed to bringing the Command and Conquer FPS experience to the current iteration of the Unreal Engine. The aim of the project is to recreate and modernize Westwood Studios’ “Command and Conquer: Renegade’s” unmatched multiplayer experience. Originally set to be current generation remake, Renegade-X has evolved into more of a spiritual successor. Featuring updated gameplay, enhanced graphics, and a new approach to map design, Renegade-X will be the game Renegade should have been.

As of September 2009, Renegade-X has been publicly available as a modification for Unreal Tournament 3. Now at beta version 0.55, the mod is no longer being developed as a modification for UT3, but as a free independent game on the Unreal Development Kit. As a result, the 0.55 beta is still available from our site, but no longer supported or patched by the development team. Currently, the team is hard at work on “Renegade-X: Black Dawn”, a single-player mini-campaign which will serve as a stepping stone towards a multiplayer beta release on the UDK.

The development of Black Dawn gives us the opportunity to update much of the outdated game code used in the Unreal Tournament version of the game, while giving our loyal fans something to tie them over until the multiplayer portion of the game is ready for release.

Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 are all here in a no-frills format. In terms of the emulation, the graphics look fine, with a few basic visual filters available to soften the jagged, low-res look that comes along with games this old. All three games generally play like they’re supposed to as well, though there’s an annoying issue where you lose control of your character for a second when you unpause during a match.

Also, I can’t in any way recommend you play this game with the old Xbox 360 D-pad. On a Dual Shock 3 or the new 360 controller with the twisting D-pad, the gameplay is fine, though a stick is naturally your best option. It’s nice that the game’s controls map directly to that special-edition joystick that shipped with the new Mortal Kombat earlier this year.

Saints Row The Third is a relief, like stretching after being locked in a box for hours. It’s an end-point for the evolution of a series that began life as a straightfaced and somewhat crass GTA clone, but with this iteration finally emerges from that shadow. Saints Row The Third feels fresh, and the reason for that is the value developers Volition place on three little letters: f-u-n.

The game doesn’t so much do its own thing as attempt to do everything (except be serious). It’s why the dictionary definition wouldn’t have helped anyway – what Saints Row is all about is unique to videogames. Every single game depends on the player’s agency, but this thing is obsessed: encouraging it, indulging it, rewarding it. It wants you to do, well – anything.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t a revolutionary game, and ‘go anywhere, do anything’ remains a sandbox catchphrase rather than a literal description. But this is a special game.

Every single weapon has a uniquelyanimated melee attack that smashes your target right in the sack (or crack, equality fans). No messing, and no coy camera angles either – there’s no doubt where the shotgun barrel is being slammed, or what its effect will be on the unfortunate. Ladies get the same groin-bruising treatment, and crumple in exactly the same way.

NO INHIBITIONS

Give a player a nice, neat open world and they’ll enjoy it for a day. Give them the tools to author total havoc in an unscripted world while acting like a sociopath, and they’ll do it forever. Call it empowerment, escapism or moral corruption, the fact is none of us will ever pilot a jet through an urban centre, nevermind call an airstrike on a traffic jam. You probably wouldn’t want to.

From one angle, these things seem like exactly what games should deliver – experiences we’ll never know in real life, dialled up and with no strings attached.

Possibilities are key. You just wouldn’t think of doing half the things you can here, and that’s its best surprise. Why not hit people with a giant purple dildo? Headplant someone and land in a perfect pose? One mission involves a rival gang’s boatful of hookers.

You can blow it up, filling the water with silicone and STDs – that’s science fact – or you can assault the boat and rescue the poor ladies, reinstalling them at the Saints’ base and raising your own gang’s ‘morale’.

In recent years, choice in games has usually meant some grim binary decision about whether to incinerate an orphanage or cut off your best mate’s knackers. Developers are obsessed with consequence.

In Saints Row it’s a choice between a fat lass in a spacesuit or a beefcake in a bikini; an octopus gun or a manapult; a jet or an ice cream van. The only disappointment, in fact, is that the sex appeal slider – which affects the size of each gender’s relevant organs – seems far too realistic when maxed out on the male characters. Or maybe that’s just us.

You wouldn’t play this in front of your mother, but that’s not exactly what entertainment’s about (sorry, mum). In fact, it’s exactly why it’s so precious. Saints Row is full of things that, in an everyday context, would simply be crass and offensive.

During the race the players may try to hit objects, drift or draft behind others to gather score. If they gathered at least 1000 score they may start using nitro.
At the end of the race when all players crossed the finish line, all left over score is converted to time bonus. For each 1000 score gathered the players receive 1 second deduction from his total race time. If a player’s time gets better with the time bonus deduction than some other player’s time he gets in front of the other in position.

Single and multiplayer game: a 35 races long single player campaign played at 7 locations. Multiplayer game up to 5 players.
3 Brand new modes of game play:
Race mode: A new twist to the racing genre: Players can gather score and burn it away to get ahead or collect score and jump to the front at the end of the race when it is converted into time bonus.
Knock-Out mode: At the end of each lap, the last player gets knocked out of the race. Those who remain, get a score bonus.

THE BOOK OF UNWRITTEN TALES

With that bold statement, HMH and KING Art have set the bar rather high. But who is this KING Art, anyway? The software maker from Bremen made its debut in the adventure scene when it was introduced as the developer for Black Mirror 2 at the 2007 GC. In the meantime though, dtp’s in-house Cranberry studio has taken over the sequel to the 2004 horror hit, leaving KING Art to work on its own project, The Book of Unwritten Tales. At the Games Convention, developer Jan Theysen and the publisher’s Egbert Latza gave us a closer look at the title.

The first thing you notice when looking at The Book of Unwritten Tales are the excellent visuals. The scenes are packed with details and in a style that makes you wonder if you’re dealing with cartoony 3D models or hand-drawn backgrounds. And as it turns out, the developer is using both of these techniques, meshing them so skillfully that the transitions are practically indiscernable.

The way characters and other real-time rendered objects integrate into the environment is stunning as well. We could already see everything coming together very nicely thanks to realistic lighting, edge-smoothing, and presumably various other tricks. The developers aren’t holding back on the lovingly made animations either. This will definitely be a feast for the eyes.

But what’s it even about? The story doesn’t sound all that exciting at first glance. In a fantasy world ravaged by war, an elderly gremlin guards an artifact that can decide the fate of the world; an army of darkness trys to snatch it and crosses paths with three heroes, who stumbled into the adventure by accident earlier. Pretty unoriginal? Wait and see.

By the time you find out that the artifact guardian is named Mortimer MacGuffin, it should have become clear that the story itself is not what the game is really all about. The Book of Unwritten Tales is designed to be a parody taking place in the world of adventure, RPG and fantasy. If The Lord of The Rings, Indiana Jones or World of Warcraft mean anything to you, you will immediately appreciate the rich game world, with references, allusions, gags and self-irony lurking around every corner. Still, our impression is that the game manages to achieve a witty style of its own, not just one defined by its references to other works.

One scene we saw in Leipzig shows just how zany things get. At some point the gnome Wilbur Wetterquarz has to become a ghost to solve a puzzle. To do that he’d have to die first, but — and therein lies the rub — that’s just not possible in a well-written adventure game. [small spoiler alert:] Just the same, he seeks out the Grim Reaper, who’s sitting in a corner bemoaning his unemployed state. The Book of the Dead in his room is completely empty. Through some trickery, Wilbur manages to put his name in the book, which considerably lifts Death’s spirits and makes him lay a hand on Wilbur. A funny cutscene follows, showing him tipping over lifelessly while his executioner settles down in his chair, puts up his bony legs and plush slippers and proceeds to slide a cigarette between his bony jaws in a distinguished manner. Afterwards, Wilbur can make his way through the visually reimagined environment as a ghost.

The presentation didn’t tell us much about the puzzles, but with over 200 items it looks like we can at least expect a plethora of inventory-related ones. One neat feature is that if the player character has been standing around for a while he will turn his head to look at hotspots needed to solve the next puzzle. There can certainly be more than one of those at a time, as The Book of Unwritten Tales isn’t completely linear; there are usually several problems the player can work on. Over the course of the game, the paths of the three heroes, namely Wilbur the gnome, Ivo the elf and Nathaniel the human, will cross, so that we can expect cooperative puzzles in the later chapters. The same puzzle can also work out quite differently depending on the selected character.

The developers have gotten the technical stuff right as well. The 3D characters have very expressive gestures and facial animations rather than just being crude dolls. KING Art is promising resolutions of every type up to 1920×1200 widescreen, zoom effects, a particle system, large-scale animations in 2D and 3D, and various light and shading effects.

The game with perhaps the most convincing presentation of the entire conference, The Book of Unwritten Tales is our surprise hit of the GC. The developers clearly love the genre and are right at home in Wilbur & Co’s world. And of course it helps that this is a pet project they’ve been thinking about for years, rather than some publisher-commissioned assignment.

Everything we got to see at the GC indicates an all around success. The game looks very good and is truly funny (at least for those who can appreciate the [German] teaser). All that’s left is for things to be smoothed out and by early 2009 – they’re aiming for a first quarter release in Germany – we can expect a real adventure gem.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 (abbreviated to PES 2012 and known officially as World Soccer: Winning Eleven 2012 in Asia) is the eleventh edition in the Pro Evolution Soccer series developed and published by Konami with production assistance from the Blue Sky Team. Lionel Messi, who has been the cover star for the series since PES 2009, will be replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The biggest flaws in last year’s game, such as defenders being unrealistically faster than attackers and teammate/goalkeeper AI are fixed for the most part, but goalkeepers still have the odd moment of braincramps and butterfingers. They don’t happen anywhere near enough to hamper the experience, but the flaws are there.
